Melotune: Accessible Vocal Pitch Editing for Windows
Melotune is a public-beta monophonic vocal pitch editor for Windows. It is built around a simple idea: detailed vocal tuning should be precise, efficient, and usable without depending on a mouse or a visual-only interface.
A note-based editing workflow
Melotune analyzes a recording, identifies voiced pitch regions, and presents them as editable note cells. You can move between cells from the keyboard, make fine one-cent adjustments, shift by semitones, select multiple cells, and undo edits. Each cell also retains its internal pitch curve, allowing correction to follow the musical movement inside a note instead of applying only a flat pitch offset.
More control inside connected phrases
Legato vocals, slides, and connected notes are not always separated perfectly by automatic analysis. Melotune provides keyboard-controlled start and end handles for narrowing an edit to a specific part of a cell. Selected ranges can be auditioned, looped, shifted, or split into independent regions. Context-aware rendering and crossfades are used around edit boundaries to reduce clicks and gaps.
Drift, modulation, and smoothing
Beyond manual pitch moves, Melotune includes controls for reducing slow pitch drift, managing faster modulation such as vibrato, and smoothing the correction target. These controls are intended to help preserve expression while correcting unstable notes, although the project is still a beta and careful listening remains essential.
Designed with accessibility at its core
Melotune is keyboard-first and provides spoken feedback through CTRLSpeech. Navigation, pitch values, timing, selected ranges, and correction parameters can be announced to screen-reader users. Accessibility is part of the product architecture rather than an afterthought, with further UI Automation and real-world screen-reader testing planned as development continues.
Current beta scope
The current version is designed for dry, monophonic sources such as a lead vocal, a solo synth line, or a clean single-note instrument. It accepts uncompressed RIFF WAVE audio and exports processed 16-bit PCM WAV files. Polyphonic pitch separation, editable project files, and autosave are not yet available. Large shifts and difficult source material can still produce audible artifacts.
The application is written in C++20 with a native Win32 interface. Rubber Band is the primary beta pitch-shifting backend, while an experimental WORLD renderer remains disabled in standard builds. A future licensed zplane SDK integration is planned for pitch shifting and formant processing, but it is not part of the current beta.
Follow the project
Melotune's source code, build instructions, keyboard reference, current limitations, and issue tracker are available on GitHub. Developers, audio engineers, vocal producers, and screen-reader users are invited to test the project and share reproducible feedback.
Beta availability and the full release
Melotune is currently in beta. The full version will be a paid product. Pricing and full-release availability have not yet been announced. Follow the project for development updates and release information.
